This pattern is a variation of the popular Elk Hair Caddis.
We omit the hackle though, and substitute the
Elk Hair with CDC. It floats extremely well, and a few false casts
after it has been drowned or taken a fish,
and it floats high again. The body colour can be adapted to your local
species, but on the Vaal system the adult
caddis flies display a light olive body, which is shorter than the
wings, which are normally a pale brown to brown colour.
Easy to tie, but a highly effective dry fly pattern.
MATERIALS:
Hook: #12 -
#16 Standard length nymph hook
Thread: 8/0
tan or brown
Body: SLF
Lifecycle dubbing (Alternate: Nymph body dubbing, dry fly dubbing) in
light olive
Wings: 4
CDC feathers
TYING INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1:
Debarb the hook, and mount it in your vice.

Step 2: Start your
thread at the eye, and work it back to a point just before the bend of
the hook.

Step 3: Spin a thin
noodle of dubbing onto the thread. Remember, spin only in one direction.

Step 4. Wind the
dubbing noodle forward to a point just behind the hook eye.

Step 5: Now wind the
thread back a little as shown. This is to make space to tie the fly off.
You MUST however tie
the wings onto the dubbing, because if you tie it onto a bare
hook shank, it will
tend to want to spin around the hook, and not sit still on top.

Step 6: Tie in about 4
or 5 CDC feathers, right on top of the dubbing. Make a few turns of the
thread to secure the wing.

Step 7: After securing
the wing into place, cut the CDC off to the right of the thread as
shown, to form a head.

Step 8: Now cut the
wing in a half-moon shape, so that it is about 1.5 times the length of
the hook shank.
Whip finish, and apply
a drop of head cement right around the securing threads.
Here is another fly, with a
ginger wing.
